Kolkata: Twenty-five years of independent music, countless performances and a distinctive Bengali sound came together as The Missing Link (TML) celebrated its 25-year musical journey with a special Unplugged Concert in Kolkata.
Held on 20 September at 7 PM at Nothing Else Matterz, Metropolis Mall, the evening, presented as “Timeless TML”, brought together the band’s music, memories and long-standing association with the Bengali independent music scene.
For The Missing Link, the milestone represents more than two decades of creating and performing original Bengali music. The band’s musical identity draws from a wide range of influences, including Rock, Blues, Jazz, Baul and Funk, while primarily working in the Bengali language.
The anniversary evening revisited some of the band’s familiar and much-loved songs, including “Joto Mot”, “Kaaktarua”, “Shorir Chai” and “Brishti”. Presented in an unplugged setting, the songs took on an intimate character, allowing the music and the performances to remain at the centre of the evening.
The event also brought together several familiar names from Kolkata: Shatarup Ghosh, Upal Sengupta, Gaurab Chatterjee (Gaboo), Nilanjana and Rajarshi, and the Band Members of Urban Monks, Anupam Roy Band, Goshai Gang, Kalpurursh, Fakira and so many among others were present as special guests.
A 25-Year Musical Journey
The Missing Link’s recorded journey includes its debut album Missing Link, released in 2004 through T-Series, followed by Kaktarua in 2008, the EP Ecche Pelam in 2012 and Ostitwo in 2023. The latter includes songs such as Somprikto and Joto Mot.
The band has also built a substantial live-performance history across West Bengal and other parts of India. Its documented milestones include winning Band-E-Mataram Season 2 in 2006 and receiving a Mirchi Music Awards nomination in 2013 in the Best Music Album category. Members of the band have also been involved in collaborations connected with films including Belaseshe, Kontho and Baba Baby O, as well as live musical projects such as Rhythmscape by Pt. Bickram Ghosh.
The present line-up features Abhinandan Bhattacharyya on vocals, Rudraneel Chowdhury and Rudra Sarkar on guitars, Rohitagni Dey on bass and Satyajit Mukherjee on drums.
Beyond the Anniversary
What made the evening significant was not simply the number 25. It was the continuity behind it. The Missing Link has remained associated with original Bengali music while drawing freely from multiple musical traditions, allowing the band’s sound to evolve without losing its identity.
“Timeless TML” therefore became an appropriate theme for an evening that looked back at the band’s musical history while celebrating the songs and relationships that continue to define its journey. Twenty-five years later, the link remains intact: more music, more memories, together.
