Kolkata: Daily commuters travelling to Sector V and New Town can now look forward to a more comfortable and affordable public transport option as the West Bengal Government’s Yatri Saathi platform introduces AC Shuttle Bus services.
The new service has been designed primarily for office-goers and aims to make daily travel to Kolkata’s major IT and business hubs more convenient. With fares starting from ₹39 and going up to a maximum of ₹69, the AC shuttle service offers an affordable alternative for regular commuters.
The initial AC shuttle services connect several important suburban areas with Kolkata’s major employment hubs.
The current routes include:
- Bali → Sector V
- Barrackpore → Sector V
- Srirampur → Sector V
- Sonarpur → New Town
The service was initially introduced on a trial basis and is now being expanded. Further extensions are planned towards Behala and Garia, which could bring the service within easier reach of more commuters across Kolkata and its surrounding areas.

Affordable AC Travel for Office Commuters
One of the key attractions of the new service is its affordable fare structure. Ticket prices start at ₹39, while the maximum fare is ₹69. For thousands of people travelling every day to Sector V and New Town, the availability of an affordable AC public transport option could help reduce dependence on private cars, motorcycles and other relatively expensive commuting options. The AC buses are also expected to provide greater comfort during Kolkata’s hot and humid weather, particularly for passengers travelling during peak office hours.
Along with comfort and affordability, passenger safety has also been given importance. The service incorporates enhanced safety measures, particularly for women passengers, making it a potentially useful option for professionals travelling early in the morning or returning home after work.
A dependable and safe public transport network is increasingly important as Kolkata’s IT and commercial districts continue to attract employees from different parts of the metropolitan region.
Sector V and New Town have become major centres for information technology, business, offices and commercial activity. The growing number of daily commuters has also increased the demand for efficient public transportation connecting these areas with residential neighbourhoods and suburban locations. The expansion of Yatri Saathi’s AC Shuttle Bus network could help strengthen this connectivity while supporting a shift towards shared public transportation. If additional routes towards Behala and Garia are introduced as planned, the network could provide commuters from more parts of Kolkata with a direct and comfortable option for travelling to the city’s major business corridors.
Affordable, reliable and comfortable public transportation can play an important role in tackling Kolkata’s traffic congestion and improving last-mile connectivity. The introduction and expansion of Yatri Saathi AC Shuttle Buses could therefore be significant for daily office commuters, particularly those travelling towards Sector V and New Town. With affordable fares, air-conditioned buses, improved safety measures and plans for wider route coverage, the service has the potential to become a useful addition to Kolkata’s growing public transport network.
